Let’s start the day, and what better way to kick it off than by getting your daily dose of Music Quotes and Coffee. It’s Wednesday, February 12, 2020. “Don’t spend your life trying to be normal”. “Don’t be the square that fits in”. That’s something that I’ve heard all my life. As I was searching for a quote for today, I found this gem by Maya Angelou.
But first, a short summary of who Maya Angelou was. She was one of America’s most beloved and celebrated poets and authors, with dozens of awards and over 50 honorary degrees attesting to her inspirational role at the center of American life. Her lifetime of achievement was rewarded in 2000 when she received the National Medal of Arts, and in 2010 President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the country’s highest honors.
The author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), the first of her seven autobiographies for which she became known, lived a long and storied life. She was also a journalist who worked in Africa, a historian, songwriter, dancer, stage and screen producer, director, performer, and singer. Maya Angelou was one of the Civil Rights Movement’s most prominent women, who worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, and devoted her life to being a tireless voice for women and black people. She died on May 28, 2014.
“If you are always trying to be normal you will never know how amazing you can be.”
Maya Angelou
As Maya mentioned, if you always try to be normal, you will probably fit in, but you will not unleash your true potential. You will never know all the things that you can do. So be a little weird, be yourself, and let the world admire what you are set to create.
